Family Resources
Honest answers to the questions families ask when they're figuring out care for someone they love.
Is home care right for my family?
Families usually call us after noticing small changes that add up. Any of these sound familiar?
- The refrigerator is empty, or food is expired — eating habits have slipped
- Missed medications, or pills organized in a way that worries you
- A recent fall, near-fall, or new unsteadiness on stairs
- The house isn't as clean as it always was; laundry and mail pile up
- Withdrawal from friends, church, or activities they used to love
- You're providing care yourself and feeling stretched past your limits
One or two of these doesn't necessarily mean around-the-clock care — often a few hours of help a week is enough to turn things around. That's exactly what the free assessment figures out.
The benefits of aging at home
Given the choice, nearly 9 in 10 seniors prefer to age in their own homes — and there are good reasons beyond preference. Familiar surroundings support memory and independence. One-on-one care means undivided attention, on your loved one's schedule, not an institution's. Home care is also flexible: it scales up and down as needs change, and for many families a part-time schedule costs meaningfully less than assisted living.
Ways families pay for care
- Private pay — the most common arrangement: simple hourly billing, no long-term contracts.
- Long-term care insurance — most policies cover non-medical home care; we'll help you understand your policy's daily benefit and requirements, and we provide the documentation insurers ask for.
- VA benefits — the Aid and Attendance benefit can help wartime veterans and surviving spouses pay for care. Learn more here.
- Life insurance conversions & annuities — some policies can be converted to pay for long-term care; a financial advisor or elder law attorney can advise you.
Regular health insurance and Medicare generally do not cover non-medical home care. If cost is a concern, tell us — a well-designed schedule of fewer, well-chosen hours often accomplishes more than families expect.
